NCURAMS Update 4/20

April 20, 2022

SOFTBALL

The North Central University (NCU) softball had a little bit of a quiet week, which for them looks like just two doubleheaders. The first was with Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opponent, the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM). The Rams and the Cougars braved the cold of the day and took the field with all sorts of energy. UMM took the first game by a score of 9-3, but NCU rallied to win the second game 9-5. The win was partly due to a homerun hit by Brooke McGlinchey, a hit that brought in four runs. Next, the Rams took on another UMAC opponent, Northland College, but NCU dropped both games with scores of 16-1 and 10-2. The Rams now stand at 9-18 overall and 2-8 on the conference, putting them second to last in the UMAC standings. However, with plenty of conference games remaining, NCU still has a shot at making the playoffs. It’s a good thing the Rams rested over the Easter break because they have four doubleheaders in a row. The first begins today, Wednesday, Apr. 20, against the University of Wisconsin Superior with game times set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

BASEBALL

On the flip side, the NCU baseball team did have a busy week, that could have been even more busy if the weather cooperated. The Rams had their rematch with the University of Northwestern (UNW) which ended in the favor of UNW at 23-5. However, NCU bounced back when they snagged three wins against Martin Luther College (MLC) over the holiday weekend. With scores of 3-2, 6-3, and 10-9, the Rams ended up on top to complete the sweep of MLC. The games went down to the final innings but NCU’s defense stood strong in the bottom of the ninth. Starting out the following week, the Rams played a doubleheader with Northland College. NCU split the doubleheader winning the first game 5-4 and falling in the second with an astonishing score of 19-17. After these games and the Ram’s mostly postponed schedule puts them at 6-5 on the season and 4-3 in the conference. The quite impressive conference record places the Rams at third in the UMAC standings. NCU has plenty of time to move up in the rankings, especially as they match up with the number one UMAC school next, Crown College. The doubleheader at Crown College is slated for this Thursday, Apr. 21, at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

LACROSSE

Still playing over the holiday, the NCU men’s lacrosse team battled their first UMAC opponents of the season. First, the Rams faced off against the University of Northwestern (UNW) and fell 21-3. Then, NCU traveled up north to Northland College and took another loss with a final score of 23-4. Senior and captain Jaydon Crim scored four goals between the two games, two in each, to lead the offense for the Rams. With just three games remaining on the season, NCU searches for their first win in a rematch with UNW today, Wednesday Apr. 20. The game will be hosted by the Rams with a game time of 4 p.m.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

The NCU track and field did not compete last week because of a canceled meet. Coming in with lots of rest, the Rams will compete in the Holst Invitational this Saturday, Apr. 23, at Concordia St. Paul University.
