North Centrals women’s basketball competes for the UMAC title for the first time in team history while the men’s season comes to a close.

The women’s basketball team has achieved a 14-7 record this season. They stand at 8-5 against in-conference opponents and are fourth in the UMAC. The team is 6-3 at home and 8-4 on the road. This season, the home game scheduled against Trinity Bible College was cancelled due to weather. The only three games left in the season are against UMAC opponents, guaranteeing the women a spot at the UMAC playoffs starting Feb. 18. The team’s lead scorers are Haleigh Filer, scoring 318 points total and averaging 14.5 points per game (ppg), and Naomi Hagstrom, scoring 308 points total and averaging 14 ppg. Filer and Hagstrom are both in the top ten scorers of the UMAC, holding the seventh and eighth spots respectively.

The men’s basketball team has pulled together a 5-17 record this season, with a 0-13 record against in-conference opponents. They hold last place in the UMAC. Their home record is 3-9, and on the road they are 1-8. They secured a victory against Finlandia University during the Carthage College Classic. On Feb. 2, the team broke a 12-game losing streak with a home win against Trinity Bible College. The two lead scorers on the team are Micah Filer, scoring 451 total points and averaging 21.5 ppg, and Jared High, scoring 377 points and averaging 17.1 ppg. Both players are in the top ten scoring leaders in the UMAC with Filer at second and High at sixth. After this season comes to a close, Jon High will be retiring from his position as Men’s Head Basketball Coach. He will remain on staff at North Central as a full-time assistant professor of Sports Management.

Both teams have a similar schedule for the rest of the season, with two away games and one home game remaining. The two road games are at University of Minnesota – Morris on Feb. 9 and at Bethany Lutheran on Feb. 13, culminating in a homestand against University of Wisconsin – Superior on Feb. 16. During the Wisconsin-Superior game the men’s team will honor Coach High for all he has done.
