6 simple things to do on Valentine’s Day — regardless of your relationship status

As the new year progresses and February begins, we once again approach the simultaneously dreaded and loved Valentine’s Day.

For some, Valentine’s Day can be an extra chance to celebrate something special, and it can bring about a time of gratitude and reflection. For others, Valentine’s Day is an external pressure that clashes with a lack of funds and creativity. Maybe, Valentine’s Day is just another reminder of your current relationship status… or lack there of. Wherever you fall on the Valentine’s Day appreciation spectrum, here are six ideas to ensure that this Feb. 14 is one to remember.

  1. Snowshoeing at the Theodore Wirth Picnic Pavilion:

Looking for a beautiful reason to get outside on Valentine’s Day? Gather some friends, or maybe just one special friend, and head to Theodore Wirth Park for the yearly snow-shoeing event. Starting at 5 o’clock p.m.,  you can sign up to be led on a one hour snow shoe tour through some of the park’s uncharted territories. The tour concludes with a fire and homemade hot chocolate at the pavilion! Buy tickets here for $14 each. Snow shoe rentals are included, but make sure to dress warm with snow boots.

  1. Catch a movie at the St. Anthony Main Theater:

Less than two miles from North Central’s campus, the St. Anthony Main Theater is the perfect place to catch a movie on Valentine’s Day! In addition to being so close to campus, they also offer Tuesday discounts. Tickets are $5 and a medium popcorn is $3.  Lucky you, these discounts also apply for Feb. 14! 1. Ice Skating at Central Park:

Keeping with the outdoor theme, Maple Grove just opened the ice trail at Central Park. It is the state’s first and only refrigerated trail made just for ice-skating. Instead of taking a walk in a park, opt for skates and a causal glide around the well-maintained surface of the scenery enhanced ice loop!  Skate rentals and concessions are open from 4-9:30 p.m. Spend the night with linked arms as you glide around the trail with your beloved, or get a group of friends together and hit the ice to beat the winter and Valentine’s Day blues.

  1. White Castle:

When thinking of the ideal Valentine’s Day date spot, White Castle is an underestimated option. From 4-9 p.m. on Feb. 14, White Castle is available by reservation only.  For 25 years, White Castle has provided a romantic evening without sacrificing the consumer’s budget.

Upon arrival to the restaurant, guests will be greeted by a host and led to a reserved table, which is draped in fine linen drizzled with candies and lit by candle light. Ordering from custom printed menus, guests can still enjoy their favorite White Castle signature ‘sliders’. Guests are served by front house staff, never having to leave the comfort of their table to order. Eighteen stores in Minnesota are participating in the tradition. Go for the experience, stay for the sliders.

  1. Qdoba BOGO:

If you have ever felt unfaithful, Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to break your deep devotion to Chipotle. Following tradition, Qdoba is offering a buy-one-get-one (BOGO) promotion for a kiss. For a peck on the cheek, hand or lips you can get a BOGO entrée at all participating locations. This promotion takes place all day long at Qdoba, so grab someone and head over there! This isn’t just for couples, so give your best friend a kiss on the cheek…it is even rumored some locations accept hugs… and receive the same deal! If you’re feeling adventurous, go alone and allow fate to work its magic, you might find someone in line. Anything is possible when discounted burritos are involved.

  1. Pizza: Never underestimate the power of pizza.

What is it about melted cheese that is so magical?  Pizza can fix problems and mend broken hearts. Whether it’s a last resort or a way to eat away your sorrows of loneliness, here are the numbers for the local pizza places that deliver to campus:

Pizza Luce: If you really want to treat yourself. 612-332-2535

Black Sheep Pizza: If your feeling coal fired: 612-886-1233

There is nothing wrong with being a cheap date, especially if you are dating yourself:

Papa Johns: 612-374-5622

Pizza Hut: 651-488-8888

Dominos: 612-338-3030

Don’t let being single on Valentine’s Day ruin a great opportunity to create lasting memories with friends that care about you. If you are in a relationship, may this Valentines Day be a special one. Remember, pizza is universal- a language for all relationship statuses, and anything is possible when discounted burritos are at stake!
